Star Persona: Backstory
To explore our star persona, I decided to create a spoken transcript for a fan of our star persona talking about what makes them special.
Transcripts contain a lack of capitalisation and punctuation, and is usually a visual representation of the voice recorded. I decided to use a transcript to show the psychographics and the ideology of what makes DJJ ultimately stand out.

TRANSCRIPT: My Inspiration
Max: ((walks to the front of the class, slightly nervous))
For appreciation day (.) I would like to talk about my favourite EDM artist (.) his name is Dylan James ((murmurs are heard around class of this well known individual)) but he is known as DJJ (2) I have always been told that the secret of success is putting your heart mind and soul into even the smallest of tasks (1) At first I thought that this was nonsense (.) but then I learned that this was what led to DJJ to become how he is now (.) and this is what I will be talking to you all about today
Dylan was born and raised in the suburbs of Hertfordshire (.) As we all may know, Hertfordshire is legit in the middle of the countryside ((laughs are heard around the classroom)) and is definitely not the most busiest of places (.) As a child (.) Dylan was :never: much of a fan of the silence that he had to ultimately become accustomed to (1) From a few visits to London to meet relatives Dylan (.) for the first time was able to look at the :amazing: city atmosphere and through these visits he became sure that Hertfordshire wasn’t for him (2) In an article actually he described Hertfordshire as “one of the most boring places on Earth” ((chuckles are heard around the classroom once again)) Unfortunately Dylan’s dad was just as in love with Hertfordshire as Dylan was in love with London (2) At the tender age of twelve, Dylan had ultimately set a new life goal.
Many obstacles came in the way of Dylan’s aspirations (2) Dylan was never the brightest of students (1) Despite having some difficulties with concentration Dylan loved the creative subjects (.) and he also discovered his love of music at high school (1) Dylan would always get into trouble for listening to music as he entered the school building (.) to make up for the silence of the outside world (.) well (.) everywhere apart from school at least (1) He would :always: get into trouble for zoning out or creating random beats with his pencils and the table or other bits and bobs (.) It was not until college where he finally had the opportunity to further develop his creativity but this was also not always a piece of cake (2) After finding essays extremely difficult to develop during his early stages of college (.) it had finally been evidenced that Dylan had developed dysgraphia (.) a writing disorder which leads to poor handwriting and difficulty with putting thoughts on paper (1) Dylan found it difficult to write his thoughts out (.) and it led to difficulties in spelling which meant that his essays were never as creditworthy as he wanted them to be (1) At first, Dylan felt incredibly unable to do anything at all, leading to a negative view of himself (2) Despite all he had gone through (.) with supportive teachers who allowed him to take online assessments (1) and use audio recorders for his final exam (1) Dylan was able to score a good enough grade to pursue a special degree in music and media which was much more practical (.) at City University of London (1) Dylan did have to work very hard (.) as he had to learn to build arocund the practiced ways to think on the spot and come up with decisions (3) Ultimately Dylan was able to succeed his goal of living in London (.) one of the loudest and busiest places in the UK. His hard work definitely reaped rewards which definitely goes to show how anything is possible (1) Thank you for listening ((students around the class applaud Max for his strong speech))

FEEDBACK: Rough Cut
In order to collect target audience feedback, we used similar people to our target audience research in order to see what feedback they had. This allowed us to understand different things to take into consideration when completing the transition cut. We used a standard screen because of the camera used to film.
Edited by Kanaiya
As a group, this feedback was summarised in a convenient form so we can continuously look back at it for improvements.

Rough Cut
In terms of the quality of the video we had a few difficulties in exporting the video to a higher quality standard, we will ensure this issue will be fixed during our final music video.

Additional Research: Editing to the Beat
When editing the rough cut, a key issue was the editing and the way it synchronized with the fast beat in the song. As a result, I decided to look into different ways of editing to the beat. This is particularly because as our song is quite fast paced, long takes may not work well.
There are many advantages and disadvantages with using this technique. Some advantages are that it is quick to do and easy to understand. However, using this technique means that it may also be easy to make mistakes, so it may take some resilience to master.
To further enhance my understanding, I used a song and practice setting markers to edit to the beat. Here is my attempt.
Alongside this, I practiced the technique with our own footage from the rough cut using the markers which I learned to use from additional research.
This is how the work space looked when I was editing to the beat.

Equipment Walk Through
In order to get the best footage, we decided to use equipment from outside of school and have highlighted the advantages and disadvantages of the equipment used in order to give an accurate perception of any drawbacks or problems we can avoid during the shoot such as bringing along a fold-able light box(which we did to avoid low quality shots in low key lighting).

Behind the Scenes: Test Shoot & Real Shoot
Before and during the shoot, Shadow Inc. decided to take some behind the scene pictures in our test shoot. During the test shoot, we also used the different equipment and made sure we could use it properly. This allowed us to be more aware about how to use the equipment on our two shoot days, and the pictures for both of these are shown below.
This is another image of the green screen we used after the day of shoot.

Additional Research: Inspiration for Powder Paint
As we wanted to be slightly more symbolic in our music video, we have decided to use a shot in which powdered paint is used. This cinematic shot will be used after our actor puts the pills in his mouth, referring to the impact of drug use. There were many inspirations of this which appealed to us and allowed us to research into significant symbolism and other features.
KANAIYA
One reason we will be using this is because of its connotative meanings. As the powder paint (most likely red, blue and yellow) will be blown at our actor, it will portray the chaos and show the destruction going on inside our actor’s brain. As we will track into the actor’s brain, this mini scene will signify what is going on inside. The colours used are also important for many reasons. The colour red connotes anger in this context. This is juxtaposed to the colour blue, which refers to a peace of mind. This emergence of both emotions will show a lack of control in the actor’s perspective. The colour yellow is associated with joy, intellect and energy and this will provide a reason for why the actor does the drugs in the first place. As the music video narrative will be about abuse which leads to drugs, and ultimately looking up to the lord, these colours will actually prove to be very vital in the music video because it also suggests the order of events, with anger, leading to excitement and ultimately a peace of mind.
ZEEL
Something which was a contributing factor to using powder colours was the recurring Colour Run in our area. After witnessing this colour run occur in my local community, as a group, we were fascinated by how much this event could spread happiness and positivity amongst those participating. However, we wanted to juxtapose this idea and give it a rather in depth meaning in relation to our actor and story board. Furthermore, this immensely abstract concept of powder paints being thrown may connote all his feeling being thrown at him all at once thus being too much to handle. As a way of incorporating the colour run, greater influences also came from social media and traditional forms of advertising around our local area. Another reason we were inspired by the colour run was due to their history which states that "the colour run promotes healthiness and happiness by bringing the community together to participate in the Happiest 5k on The Planet, hosting events in over 200 cities and 40 countries” Personally expressing the message “It is okay not to be okay” and it is also very normal to “express your feelings”, We hope to put forward a positive message through a juxtaposed ideology.
SONALI
Holi is a Hindu festival which is another factor that inspired us to throw holi colours at our actor to represent his emotions. It’s a festival that celebrates the victory of good over evil and the colours (blue, red and yellow) connote happiness and emotions. It helps the people to follow a good conduct in their lives and believe in the virtue of being truthful. Good and evil is being represented in our music video as in the beginning he’s going through a difficult time which leads to him taking drugs and he becomes very angry and frustrated, but towards the end he prays to God and this connotes he has overcome his problems. Holi ultimately means forgiveness, love and good. In a video called “Kesha - Take It Off” they are using holi colours and throwing it at each other. The phrase “Take it off” suggests be whoever you want to be, and avoid negative people.

Additional Planning: Letter for Actor
For organisation to be prominent in the production of our music video, I created this letter (given to our actor last week) to avoid any confusions. This document also ensures that our actor is given a better idea of what to expect, and is aware of what will be going on in the coming days.
Along with this, the production schedule I created was also distributed to members of the cast and crew to avoid any misconceptions or misunderstandings.

Further Website Analysis
So I could have a clearer understanding of the features included in one of the ancillary products I will be creating, I decided to analyse two additional websites. I looked into the homepage and the "tour dates" page, and found many similarities and differences between them. This task also allowed me to develop a better understanding of what to include on my own media product.
I analysed the website for Diplo and for Kygo.
To summarise, most of the websites I looked into as well as the ones I analysed used a range of similar features such as the use of the main image. bold typography, and the visibility of "Tour Dates".
In order to understand websites further, I decided to create a website interface for our imaginary "Star Persona" on Photoshop. In this task, I also placed the screen on a Mac that I created, This allowed me to explore the use of gradients as well as the importance of layers and other factors.

Which Institution will Sign our Artist?
I looked at potential institutions that would sign our artist and shortlisted the number to three. Thereafter, I went over the advantages and disadvantages of each one to ultimately come up with an institution that would sign our artist.
Branding & Synergy
We decided to research different ways that known EDM artists create branding and synergy throughout different platforms.
Through discussion, we understood that logos and colours are the key features that contribute to the branding and synergy in ancillary products.
We created a presentation to further elaborate on this.
How will we implement this in our own work?
To create synergy across our media products, colour will play a key role. This is the most simple way and will be useful because of the huge role that colour has in EDM. We will also reciprocate synergy through the editing effects which we will try to replicate across our products. Examples of this would be the use of the scribble effect, as well as the ghost effect. Finally, we will create familiarity through the pictures we take and we will ensure that they are in similar locations so there is no confusions. We have decided to go with simple aspects because the EDM genre itself is incredibly chaotic in terms of its use of colour and ideologies and we would like to juxtapose this.

Original vs. Our Song
As a group, we watched the original music video and looked into the use of micro elements. This will allow us to understand and compare how we will develop our own music video.

Due to the audio difficulties I have written a script:
Sonali
When analysing the shot type for the song Titanium there were many shots being used. A long shot was being used in the beginning when there was a young boy in the centre and everything around him was destroyed a close-up shot is being used on the paper and the mess around him. In our music video, we will be incorporating many different shots to ensure the audience are aware of what's going on. In terms of angle, low angle is being used to make the character look more powerful and big as we can see he has superpowers. In our music video, we might be incorporating a low angle to create a positive message at the end to connote he has defeated his problems. In terms of movement tracking shot is being used to show the boy has superpowers we might be incorporating steadicam and tracking shot to ensure the audience are engaged with the music video. In terms of composition, we will be using loose frame in our music video to show the character is isolated and unimportant and is facing many barriers in life. Overall, within camerawork we will be sticking to the common conventions of EDM to ensure we grab the audience's attention.

Which ancillary tasks have we chosen?
Individually, each of us will be creating two ancillary products.
Kanaiya: The two ancillary products that I have decided to create are a website and a digipak. I chose a website because in our modern generation of technological convergence, websites are the key to the providing of key information. When contemplating about which to choose, I considered the large amount of advantages that websites had. An example of this is that it can be shared on a number of media platforms and it can also give much more information than a poster would. In our target audience research, I was also able to understand that people had more knowledge about websites than the other two ancillary products. I have chosen a digipak because of my ability to be creative in its development. As our genre is EDM, the possibilities are quite endless in terms of what to include. Furthermore, in target audience research, it was interesting to consider the many features that they would like. Some of these features (e.g. exclusive information) merges quite well with what is found on a website. The reason why I rejected the creation of an advert for the digipak is because I felt that it would limit my creativity, whereas creating a digipak will allow me to be photographically creative as well. From primary target audience research, I was able to understand that in our modern generation, the proliferation of technology means that people are visiting websites more than ever. This is why they were so fluid in conversation of websites in comparison to albums poster.
Zeel: I have chosen to use a website and digipack as my ancillary tasks.
Website: Based on my target audience research and proliferation of the media market i have learnt that it is essential to provide our target audience with an all accessible platform where all the information they need can be accessed through less than one click. Furthermore due to the proliferation of the media market led by technological convergence contemporary society has found that posters have become rather outdated and the internet has led to social media influences rising drastically.
Digipack: I have decided to do a digipack based on the fact that they can attract the audience through eye-catching photography/ digital design. This increases economic value and surplus for the artist. This also allows the artist to represent themselves through synergy without using the internet. This will also be a creative representation of the artist and the way they are portrayed by the audience. In the past, digipacks have been significant with major artists such as Rihanna and her aLBUM "Loud".
Sonali: After researching into posters, digipak and websites I have come to a conclusion and decided to choose digipak and website as this would be the most effective way to promote our music video to our target audience as it would appeal to them the most and grab their attention. Internet is widely used and many people have access to it, and therefore by using a website it would be more efficient as all the information would be on one platform and this would prevent the audience having to do further research as everything will be stated on the website. Posters are seen as old fashioned and it would not attract a larger audience as the internet has a huge influence on society. I have decided to do a digipak as it will allow the artist to express his personality and characterstics through typography and images, and therefore attract the audiences attention as it will look appealing. I also undertook target audience research for digipak and website which gave me a better understanding of what my target audience expect to see on a digipak and website and this will ensure I filfil their needs.

Typography: Target Audience Research
I developed a questionnaire which was distributed to people who fit the psychographics of our target audience. They were enquired about the types of fonts they preferred and a range of selection had been gven, as well as the option to state that they did not like any of the fonts.
This information will be useful as it has given me an idea of what types of fonts to utilise in the development of my digipak and website.
From the fonts in which "Escape" was written, I found that the most popular option was option 1. The least favourite options were joint of 2, 3 and 4.
When looking at the font for the copy I found that option B was the most popular and two people also said that they did not like any of the fonts, which will allow me to reconsider what fonts to use at a later stage.

DIgipak & Website: Target Audience Research
I developed a questionnaire which was distributed to people who fit the age bracket of our target audience. They were enquired about the ancillary tasks, as well as briefly about our music video (as we have already conducted proper target audience research for the music video).
This information will be useful as it has given me an idea of what to prioritise, develop and utilise in the formation of the digipak.
As I was not satisfied with how much this research would apply to my own website, I created an additional questionnaire which was distributed to 20 people in which I conducted more specific research for my own website. Examples of questions I asked were "What colour schemes stand out"
The majority of participant preferred option D as their favourite colour scheme. One participant suggested a colour scheme and this colour scheme stood out to me immediately. This is because of how unique it was, and it also corresponded well to the EDM genre.
The majority of participants rated the logo 4 out of 5 and suggested that enhancing colour would make the logo more effective.
60% of participants preferred the horizontal style whereas only 4% preferred the vertical buttons.

In this, we were able to learn many things; for example, the colours that stood out to them and what to include in our own websites.
In order to gain a more in depth understanding, Zeel created forms which our target audience could fill out in order to gain more qualitative and detailed research.
Here are the overall findings:

Target Audience Research: Website
I gathered primary research from our target audience in which I
decided to make a questionnaire, and therefore the information I have
gathered will help me make sure the features I decide to incorporate
will look appealing and grab their attention.
EDM Typography Analysis & Target Audience
I analysed the typography for websites and albums from EDM artists this would be benefical for me as I would be aware of the codes and conventions of typography to ensure my ancillary products look appealing and grab the audiences attention.
DJ SNAKE: Website
AFROJACK: Website
ZEDD: Album
SKRILLEX: Album
Once analysing the typography for websites and albums I decided to gather primary research from our target audience which font and colour they preferred the most, and therefore will help me make a decision.

Why are digipaks important?
Here, I looked into some of the many reasons why digipaks are important to their audiences.
Analysis of Digipaks
After that, I looked for digipaks which related to the EDM genres. I found "4x4=24" by Deadmau5, which did not seem to follow the conventions of EDM. This was interesting due to the simplicity which was unexpected to be found in the EDM genre in general.
This may have been done in order to relate to the idea of rebellion and going against the norms in the EDM genre.
What I found extremely prominent was how band/artist identity was incredibly important in both digipaks and some of the others that I had seen.
However, this digipak in particular was one which stood out...
This is because of the stylistics which referred to the electric element of EDM. Even though common conventions were present, such as the name of the duo in specific typography, and the use of bar codes, I felt that the design of electronics was extremely prominent and quite well designed. The common colours seen were yellow, white and blue, and the continuity throughout each flap made it look visually appealing, particularly because of the recurring theme of technology.
This research will be useful because it has allowed me to understand how I will incorporate aesthetics with our genre to create a visually appealing digipak, if this is chosen.
Ancillary Research
As a group, we went over the importance of websites, posters, and digipaks. This research will be useful in the development of our ancillary products.

Prop Research
When thinking of EDM, some images which came to mind were of clubbing, partying, and lights. These ideas enabled me to create a brain storm about specific props to consider using when creating an EDM music video.
Other props which can be considered:
- Alcohol
- Smoke machine for smoke
- Amplifiers
- Microphone
- Guitars, drums (if video is performance based)
- Drugs of some sort
The props that we will be using in our own music video are as follows:
- Drugs (Pills): As our story is about an individual who is going through abuse, it will ultimately lead to drug abuse. This will lead to strange impacts which will be explored through the use of the scribble effect.
- Powder Colour: As our narrative consists of a cinematic shot involving the use of powder colour, we will be using blue and yellow powder to create a cinematic effect.
- Skull Snood: To ensure that the transfer to the dark side is clear, we have decided to use a skull snood to show the darkness within. Fortunately, our actor already owns one so this will be very easily accessible.
- Leaving Note: To establish that our character is running away from home, we have decided to use a note which justifies his reason for leaving. This note had to be handwritten and come across as quite angry and aggressive. After looking into different fonts and styles, I decided to use the font MyChemicalRomance and I created and illustrated the note shown below. I have ensured the copy is quite thick and comes across as something written out of anger. However, it will also create enigma and mystery.

EDM Target Audience Walkthrough
When making my own music video it will be essential that I have taken all the information from the target audience and keep referring back to them when making any changes in order to gain the best possible result for our music video as possible. As the target audience will be between 16-24 it will be essential that I can meet their needs whilst using the some of the codes and conventions of the EDM genre. By choosing to subvert some genres for effect such as gender, it will be clarified and justified if need be.
EDM Typography Analysis: Websites & Digipacks/Albums
The following is a heavy analysis of the EDM typography that is presented in websites and digipacks. This will be essential as i will be creating my own font and will therefore, need to know the codes and conventions of EDM typography for both my digipack and for my website. After creating several variations of my font, i will be asking my target audience which one they prefer, furthermore enabling me to use the chosen when creating my ancillary tasks.
The Chainsmokers:
Skrillex: Calvin Harris: Overview: Common Conventions of the EDM typography in both Websites and Digipacks!
1) Font: Either extremely simplistic(Helvetica) or abstract (Trashhand)
2) Colour-scheme: Contrasting colours such as: Black, White, Red, Blue, Green.
3) Size: The artists name must be the biggest and most appealing thing on the page, no matter what.
4) Tracking: Must be easy to read and aesthetically pleasing so very spaced out.
5) Kerning: Overall, very close to one another in a uniform manner or completely abstract.
6) Aperture: Can be changed for various texts to create a more unpredictable and party like feel.

Narrative Timeline
As a group, we discussed thoroughly into the possible timeline of our music video. We decided to develop a story in reverse but in forward motion to confuse the audience, which is a convention of the EDM genre. At the end of our music video, we will have a continuation of what was shown in the beginning after there is a reverse montage of the story.
Song Breakdown
I annotated our chosen song David Guetta- Titanium ft Sia, and made notes on ideas that come to mind when reading the lyrics.
Copyright Clearance
As we will be using the song Titanium by David Guetta ft. Sia, I decided to get into contact with EMI records to ask for permission to use their track. Here is a screenshot of the email that I had sent them:
Shortlist of Songs and Pitch
Individually, we had to pick two songs to pitch to the rest of the class. The songs I chose were Bastille: Pompeii, and David Guetta ft. Sia: which is the song that was ultimately selected.
After our pitches, we discussed our respective six songs and looked at the strengths and limitations. From discussion, we concluded with the use of Titanium by David Guetta due to the powerful, yet vague lyrics and the fast paced vibe was also an appeal to us.

Star Persona: DJJ
Below is the logo I created for our star persona, DJJ.
I created a logo for our artist DJJ, so the audience are able to recoginse him the logo will also create more awareness. It will be used for my ancillary products (digipak and website). Many successful artists have a logo to allow consumers to recoginse them, and this would also increase in income as more consumers would purchase their merchandise because they would recieve a good impression.
Make Up Research
I created a brainstorm of different mise en scene elements, and also included EDM conventions which helped me get a better understanding of what mise en scene elements we might incorporate in our music video.

Intertextuality-.
Here I have looked into Intertextuality and why it would not be suitable for our music video especially within the EDM genre as it is not a typical conventions.
Secondary Research - Target Audience
I gathered secondary research for our chosen genre, Electronic Dance Music to get a better understanding of our target audience, such as; characteristic and psychographics.
Poster Research
I analysed three posters from our genre EDM which helped me understand what information to incorporate in poster, but also the layout.

Costume Research
Here is my analysis of typical EDM artists and their style. As our actor is male, I have only looked into male EDM artist. Furthermore, the general conventions of the EDM style include very laid back and casual. Whether we chose to accept and recreate this convention or reject and subvert this convention is now up for discussion within the group.

Star Persona- DJJ
Here is a logo I have created for my star persona and his branding will include the following logo.
Name: DJJ
Single: Titanium
Featuring: Nuno
This logo will be part of my star personas branding and is therefore absolutely essential that it is out there so the public can recognise him mainly through his logo.
His logo shall be used during the ancillary tasks as well as making merchandise for him.
This is significant as many famous DJ's such as Deadmau5 and Skrillex all have specific logos that are used as identifiers, this in turn created more awareness for the artist and attracts wider audiences, as well as allowing a greater source of income through branded merchandise, posters used in cross media convergence as well as synergistic products.

Shot By Shot Remake Analysis
Here is my evaluation for the shot by shot remake including what we have done well and what we could potentially reflect upon when planning, filming and editing our actual music video.
Song Shortlist & Pitch
I have presented my pitch to the rest of the group in regards to what song I am going to do for our actual coursework. Unfortunately, we have chosen another song: Titanium by David Guetta Featuring Sia, pitched by Kanaiya. I look forward to doing this song as it falls under the EDM genre which is fun yet lyrically includes a rather "deep" meaningful aspect which I would enjoy. It also meets my needs to practice special effects I would like to use as this is a reoccurring convention within the EDM genre.

Song Shortlist and Pitch
I pitched two songs in front of the class which were Bad Days and Stay With Me. However, as a group, we decided to choose Kanaiyas song Titanium by David Guetta Featuring Sia. This song is part of the EDM genre which includes many conventions which we can incorporate in our music video.
Lyrical Breakdown
Here, I annotated the lyrics of our chosen song from start to finish, writing out ideas in terms of narrative, cinematography, mise-en-scene, camerawork and editing. This task allowed me to understand how a range of editing techniques in particular could be used, a well as ideas of the narrative of our music video.
This is only an idea of the narrative that could be considered. I will be pitching to the rest of the group and we will ultimately come up with a conclusion of our narrative.
