Equipment Walk Through

In order to get the best footage, we decided to use equipment from outside of school and have highlighted the advantages and disadvantages of the equipment used in order to give an accurate perception of any drawbacks or problems we can avoid during the shoot such as bringing along a fold-able light box(which we did to avoid low quality shots in low key lighting).

Behind the Scenes: Test Shoot & Real Shoot

Before and during the shoot, Shadow Inc. decided to take some behind the scene pictures in our test shoot. During the test shoot, we also used the different equipment and made sure we could use it properly. This allowed us to be more aware about how to use the equipment on our two shoot days, and the pictures for both of these are shown below.

This is another image of the green screen we used after the day of shoot.

Additional Research: Inspiration for Powder Paint

As we wanted to be slightly more symbolic in our music video, we have decided to use a shot in which powdered paint is used. This cinematic shot will be used after our actor puts the pills in his mouth, referring to the impact of drug use. There were many inspirations of this which appealed to us and allowed us to research into significant symbolism and other features.

KANAIYA
One reason we will be using this is because of its connotative meanings. As the powder paint (most likely red, blue and yellow) will be blown at our actor, it will portray the chaos and show the destruction going on inside our actor’s brain. As we will track into the actor’s brain, this mini scene will signify what is going on inside. The colours used are also important for many reasons. The colour red connotes anger in this context. This is juxtaposed to the colour blue, which refers to a peace of mind. This emergence of both emotions will show a lack of control in the actor’s perspective. The colour yellow is associated with joy, intellect and energy and this will provide a reason for why the actor does the drugs in the first place. As the music video narrative will be about abuse which leads to drugs, and ultimately looking up to the lord, these colours will actually prove to be very vital in the music video because it also suggests the order of events, with anger, leading to excitement and ultimately a peace of mind.

ZEEL
Something which was a contributing factor to using powder colours was the recurring Colour Run in our area. After witnessing this colour run occur in my local community, as a group, we were fascinated by how much this event could spread happiness and positivity amongst those participating. However, we wanted to juxtapose this idea and give it a rather in depth meaning in relation to our actor and story board. Furthermore, this immensely abstract concept of powder paints being thrown may connote all his feeling being thrown at him all at once thus being too much to handle. As a way of incorporating the colour run, greater influences also came from social media and traditional forms of advertising around our local area. Another reason we were inspired by the colour run was due to their history which states that "the colour run promotes healthiness and happiness by bringing the community together to participate in the Happiest 5k on The Planet, hosting events in over 200 cities and 40 countries” Personally expressing the message “It is okay not to be okay” and it is also very normal to “express your feelings”, We hope to put forward a positive message through a juxtaposed ideology.

SONALI
Holi is a Hindu festival which is another factor that inspired us to throw holi colours at our actor to represent his emotions. It’s a festival that celebrates the victory of good over evil and the colours (blue, red and yellow) connote happiness and emotions. It helps the people to follow a good conduct in their lives and believe in the virtue of being truthful. Good and evil is being represented in our music video as in the beginning he’s going through a difficult time which leads to him taking drugs and he becomes very angry and frustrated, but towards the end he prays to God and this connotes he has overcome his problems. Holi ultimately means forgiveness, love and good. In a video called “Kesha - Take It Off” they are using holi colours and throwing it at each other. The phrase “Take it off” suggests be whoever you want to be, and avoid negative people.

Storyboard Animatic

As a group, we created a storyboard. Kanaiya then converted this into an animatic, which presents the storyboard in real time, as it goes with the music.

Additional Planning: Letter for Actor

For organisation to be prominent in the production of our music video, I created this letter (given to our actor last week) to avoid any confusions. This document also ensures that our actor is given a better idea of what to expect, and is aware of what will be going on in the coming days.

Along with this, the production schedule I created was also distributed to members of the cast and crew to avoid any misconceptions or misunderstandings.

Additional Planning: Production Planning

As I wanted the team to be organised before the actual shoot day, I created a power point that puts all of our information into a brief yet convenient form. Furthermore, this document highlights exactly what each person is doing on the day of the shoot so that we are efficient and proactive.

Shot Blocking for our Music Video

For a clearer idea about the settings we will be using, I blocked the shots out which will be utilised when we are shooting during both days.

Casting

As a group we decided to choose Sarvesh as our actor as he was more suitable for the role due to his facial expressions and expressed good emotions compared to the other participants. He was also available on the two shooting days and able to commute to our three locations.

Further Website Analysis

So I could have a clearer understanding of the features included in one of the ancillary products I will be creating, I decided to analyse two additional websites. I looked into the homepage and the "tour dates" page, and found many similarities and differences between them. This task also allowed me to develop a better understanding of what to include on my own media product.

I analysed the website for Diplo and for Kygo.

To summarise, most of the websites I looked into as well as the ones I analysed used a range of similar features such as the use of the main image. bold typography, and the visibility of "Tour Dates".

In order to understand websites further, I decided to create a website interface for our imaginary "Star Persona" on Photoshop. In this task, I also placed the screen on a Mac that I created, This allowed me to explore the use of gradients as well as the importance of layers and other factors.

Which Institution will Sign our Artist?

I looked at potential institutions that would sign our artist and shortlisted the number to three. Thereafter, I went over the advantages and disadvantages of each one to ultimately come up with an institution that would sign our artist.

Branding & Synergy

We decided to research different ways that known EDM artists create branding and synergy throughout different platforms.

Through discussion, we understood that logos and colours are the key features that contribute to the branding and synergy in ancillary products.

We created a presentation to further elaborate on this.

How will we implement this in our own work?

To create synergy across our media products, colour will play a key role. This is the most simple way and will be useful because of the huge role that colour has in EDM. We will also reciprocate synergy through the editing effects which we will try to replicate across our products. Examples of this would be the use of the scribble effect, as well as the ghost effect. Finally, we will create familiarity through the pictures we take and we will ensure that they are in similar locations so there is no confusions. We have decided to go with simple aspects because the EDM genre itself is incredibly chaotic in terms of its use of colour and ideologies and we would like to juxtapose this.

Digipak and album poster analysis.

In order to get a better understanding about the type of ancillary products i am going to use it required me to use extensive research.

Production Schedule

In order to ensure that development of our music video is as efficient as possible, I have created a production schedule in order to give a clearer idea as of how the shoot days will pan out. This will be distributed to all members of the cast and crew and will prove useful when filming.

On Sunday, we will be completing shot scrutiny for the first shoot day, and on Tuesday 21st November, we will conduct a shot scrutiny for the 20th.

Original vs. Our Song

As a group, we watched the original music video and looked into the use of micro elements. This will allow us to understand and compare how we will develop our own music video.

Due to the audio difficulties I have written a script:
Sonali
When analysing the shot type for the song Titanium there were many shots being used. A long shot was being used in the beginning when there was a young boy in the centre and everything around him was destroyed a close-up shot is being used on the paper and the mess around him. In our music video, we will be incorporating many different shots to ensure the audience are aware of what's going on. In terms of angle, low angle is being used to make the character look more powerful and big as we can see he has superpowers. In our music video, we might be incorporating a low angle to create a positive message at the end to connote he has defeated his problems. In terms of movement tracking shot is being used to show the boy has superpowers we might be incorporating steadicam and tracking shot to ensure the audience are engaged with the music video. In terms of composition, we will be using loose frame in our music video to show the character is isolated and unimportant and is facing many barriers in life. Overall, within camerawork we will be sticking to the common conventions of EDM to ensure we grab the audience's attention.

Shot List

I created a shot of all the shots that we will be using for both the productions days this is to ensure we don't miss any important shots and they are taken correctly.

Please note, the order of these shots are subject to change.

Additional Research: How do I use a Drone?

As we will be utilising a drone in the development of our music video, I decided to complete further research into the use of a drone for beginners. This research will help me be supportive in the production of our music video.

To ensure drone shots use contribute well to the final media product, I also decided to watch this video which gives a range of tips in the utilisation.

Additional Research: Camera Equipment

In order, to receive a better understanding of the new camera equipment we borrowed externally I analysed the features, advantages, and disadvantages of the equipments to avoid any problems that could arise when filming. I also watched tutorial videos for the camera equipments to ensure the shots are filmed correctly and to a good standard.

Risk Assessment

In order to understand the risks associated with the development of our Media product, we decided to contribute on a spreadsheet to explain particular hazards, their risk level and precautions to avoid it from happening. This is what we came up with as a result:

Additional Planning: Church Filming Permission

Kanaiya and I had decided to call the church we would like to use to gain permission to film.

This was just an informal way of contacting them, as further-on in this process we will ensure release forms for the location and actors have been signed.

Which ancillary tasks have we chosen?

Individually, each of us will be creating two ancillary products.

Kanaiya: The two ancillary products that I have decided to create are a website and a digipak. I chose a website because in our modern generation of technological convergence, websites are the key to the providing of key information. When contemplating about which to choose, I considered the large amount of advantages that websites had. An example of this is that it can be shared on a number of media platforms and it can also give much more information than a poster would. In our target audience research, I was also able to understand that people had more knowledge about websites than the other two ancillary products. I have chosen a digipak because of my ability to be creative in its development. As our genre is EDM, the possibilities are quite endless in terms of what to include. Furthermore, in target audience research, it was interesting to consider the many features that they would like. Some of these features (e.g. exclusive information) merges quite well with what is found on a website. The reason why I rejected the creation of an advert for the digipak is because I felt that it would limit my creativity, whereas creating a digipak will allow me to be photographically creative as well. From primary target audience research, I was able to understand that in our modern generation, the proliferation of technology means that people are visiting websites more than ever. This is why they were so fluid in conversation of websites in comparison to albums poster.

Zeel: I have chosen to use a website and digipack as my ancillary tasks.

Website: Based on my target audience research and proliferation of the media market i have learnt that it is essential to provide our target audience with an all accessible platform where all the information they need can be accessed through less than one click. Furthermore due to the proliferation of the media market led by technological convergence contemporary society has found that posters have become rather outdated and the internet has led to social media influences rising drastically.

Digipack: I have decided to do a digipack based on the fact that they can attract the audience through eye-catching photography/ digital design. This increases economic value and surplus for the artist. This also allows the artist to represent themselves through synergy without using the internet. This will also be a creative representation of the artist and the way they are portrayed by the audience. In the past, digipacks have been significant with major artists such as Rihanna and her aLBUM "Loud".

Sonali: After researching into posters, digipak and websites I have come to a conclusion and decided to choose digipak and website as this would be the most effective way to promote our music video to our target audience as it would appeal to them the most and grab their attention. Internet is widely used and many people have access to it, and therefore by using a website it would be more efficient as all the information would be on one platform and this would prevent the audience having to do further research as everything will be stated on the website. Posters are seen as old fashioned and it would not attract a larger audience as the internet has a huge influence on society. I have decided to do a digipak as it will allow the artist to express his personality and characterstics through typography and images, and therefore attract the audiences attention as it will look appealing. I also undertook target audience research for digipak and website which gave me a better understanding of what my target audience expect to see on a digipak and website and this will ensure I filfil their needs.

Digipak and Website Analysis

To receive a better understanding of all three ancillary products (digipak, website and album/poster) I gathered research for digipak and website, and therefore I will be able to make a final decision in which two ancillary products I decide to choose.

Typography: Target Audience Research

I developed a questionnaire which was distributed to people who fit the psychographics of our target audience. They were enquired about the types of fonts they preferred and a range of selection had been gven, as well as the option to state that they did not like any of the fonts.

This information will be useful as it has given me an idea of what types of fonts to utilise in the development of my digipak and website.

From the fonts in which "Escape" was written, I found that the most popular option was option 1. The least favourite options were joint of 2, 3 and 4.
When looking at the font for the copy I found that option B was the most popular and two people also said that they did not like any of the fonts, which will allow me to reconsider what fonts to use at a later stage.

DIgipak & Website: Target Audience Research

I developed a questionnaire which was distributed to people who fit the age bracket of our target audience. They were enquired about the ancillary tasks, as well as briefly about our music video (as we have already conducted proper target audience research for the music video).

This information will be useful as it has given me an idea of what to prioritise, develop and utilise in the formation of the digipak.

As I was not satisfied with how much this research would apply to my own website, I created an additional questionnaire which was distributed to 20 people in which I conducted more specific research for my own website. Examples of questions I asked were "What colour schemes stand out"

The majority of participant preferred option D as their favourite colour scheme. One participant suggested a colour scheme and this colour scheme stood out to me immediately. This is because of how unique it was, and it also corresponded well to the EDM genre.
The majority of participants rated the logo 4 out of 5 and suggested that enhancing colour would make the logo more effective.
60% of participants preferred the horizontal style whereas only 4% preferred the vertical buttons.
