Recreating a poster using Photoshop

I recreated the poster for Jessie J. The poster on the left is the original poster, and the version on the right is the poster I recreated on Photoshop. The font is different as it was not available on Photoshop. As a less experienced user using Photoshop I was not aware of the key features and tools, and therefore had to watch a few tutorial videos in advance to ensure I knew what each feature did. However, completing this task had given me a better understanding of how to use Photoshop which will be beneficial when creating my ancillary products.

Remake of Distorture's Digipak

As I wanted to look further into what is placed on a digipak, I decided to create a remake on Photoshop. Unfortunately, the image was slightly distorted so I was unable to understand what the copy was. As a result, I made the copy up.

I also evaluated my digipak so I know how to improve if I was to do the task again.

Remake of Ed Sheeran's Album Poster

To enhance my Photoshop skills, I created a remake of a poster for an album. This allowed me to explore a wide range of techniques such as using white wash (and balancing colours and opacity).

Here is the poster that I attempted to remake:

Here is my remake:

Looking for specific fonts and symbols will allow me to practice what will be expected during the ancillary task in the duration of this coursework.

Record Label Research

Researching record labels allowed me to understand the way that different record labels worked. It was interesting to acknowledge how different record labels work with a variety of genres rather than one genre in order to appeal to a wider target audience.

As I was quite confused about the differences between record labels and music publishers, I did some further research. This video in particular allowed me to get rid of any confusions that I had.

Adele, Bastille and Stormzy

Whilst researching, I developed case studies of three different artists who were professionals in their music genre.

Adele, Bastille, and Stormzy are artists and bands for different genres. Here is more details on their work.

Record Label Research

By analysing three different record labels helped me to understand how they operate and why they chose certain elements. It helped me gain knowledge about the comanpy and the different artists they work with.

What is the purpose of a music video?

Music videos are an integral part in the media which reflects on the music from artists in a quite spectacular way. Here, I aim to explore the real purposes behind a music video and the impact this has on the consumers.

This article by Sarah Boardman also allowed me to explore the impacts the music videos have on the 21st century.

Record Company Logo Ideas

I created three logo drafts that portrayed a good meaning and it was related to our record label name "Shadow Inc". I wanted to ensure my logos portrayed a good meaning, but also keeping it simple to ensure it looked professional and elegant.

Music Video Remake: Narrative & Performance

As a class, we developed a shot by shot remake of the song "Jealous" by Labyrinth. I then converted this into a narrative with performance music video with elements of the shot by shot developed before. Due to copyright issues, the audio had to be slightly altered.

Record Company Logo Ideas

After a lot of discussion, we concluded that the best name for our record label would be "Shadow Inc." because of the way that themes are easily incorporated and ideas can be contributed by its connotational meanings. Here are the three logo sketches I created based on these specific ideas.

Overall, I thought this logo was quite simple and had a strong hidden meaning. This article allowed me to explore the reasons why a simple logo was effective, as I learned how factors such as replication would spread awareness of our record label.

Although I felt this logo was slightly over complicated, I felt that the interpretations were very unique and different, which would make it stand out because of being memorable, another feature advised on the article that I read.

This logo was based on my desire to ensure that our genre and ideas were easily spread, incorporating some elements of the name of the record label in the word "Shadow". The use of the treble clef represented the record label as well.

Shot by Shot Remake and Analysis

Developing a shot by shot remake allowed me to understand how important it is to be precise in a music video. Unfortunately, because of SME content on the shot by shot video, it has been blocked. However, in the analysis, snippets of the shot by shot have been included.

Analysing my remake allowed me to understand where I went wrong in order for me to improve when it comes to our actual music video.

Initial Research: Ancillary

In order to have a better understanding of what to expect, I conducted some independent research on the different ancillary products.

This research will be helpful as it can allow me to make choices beforehand.

THIS extract from a book has also allowed me to think of the branding of our star persona, which we will be doing at a later stage.

Initial Research: Music Videos

Initial Research for music videos helped me to understand the different types of music videos there are (narrative, performance, concept) and how they could be integrated to create an overall product. This research will help me to consider ways to better our music video once we have created it.

This video also allowed me to think of ways to make a unique music video:

Record Label Logo Drafts.

Here are some drafts that I have created myself for our record label as seen from prominent research completed before hand. I wanted something rather simplistic in terms of outer meaning yet still have a deep inference towards it. These three drafts are created on Adobe Photoshop CS5 from scratch.

Record Label Research

Here is some record label research I have completed in order to get a general overview of the existing record labels are in our contemporary society and how they are conveyed through their logos. In addition to the types of artists they're assigned to and what this tells us about the record company itself. This has helped me analyse different types of record labels and understand specific correlations between the analysis and their in depth meanings behind certain fonts, colours etc.

Final Logo

Above, is the final logo that I have created for our record company through Photoshop CS6. In order to achieve the "glitch" effect I had to do further research and use tutorials in order to expand my Photoshop skills. Not to mention, I have reflected upon my draft 1 and have come to the conclusion that the glitch effect needed to be added in order to in-cooperate the conventions of our genre which is Electronic Pop therefore adding a bit of colour too.

Here is the tutorial I used:

Artist Analysis

This artist analysis has helped me understand the interrelated aspect of an artist and why they dress and have their music videos in certain ways. Thus exploring internal and external factors that affect the musicians ability to connect and attract these audiences.
